EMDR Therapy
overcoming trauma
Dr. Friedman is a trained EMDR therapist and is pleased to offer this healing modality to her patients suffering with PTSD, trauma, and many types of psychological distress.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) appears to affect how the brain processes information, mimicking what occurs naturally during dreaming or REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. This scientifically proven and powerful psychotherapeutic tool cannot erase trauma, but it does help patients to view the disturbing experience in a less distressing manner: the trauma is not forgotten but its power is diminished. Many patients feel a great reduction in disturbance following an EMDR session.
EMDR has been designated as an effective treatment for PTSD, trauma, and other psychological distresses by, among others:
- The American Psychiatric Association
- The World Health Organization
- The U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs and the Dept. of Defense
- The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services
